Inside the museum, you will find a variety of historical objects starting from the prehistoric period of the city region, the Dutch colonization period until Indonesia’s Independence in 1945.

There’s also an underground prison that was once used to imprison Pangeran Diponegoro, the Javanese freedom fighter.

  • Monas (The National Monument Statue)

The National Monument Statue or what people usually call as Monas is a monument that was built to commemorate the struggle of Indonesian heroes who fought the colonial domination. This monument is 132 meter tall and is chosen as Jakarta icon that symbolizes the fight for Indonesia.

Monas was built based on the idea of Ir. Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia. He was helped by Sudarsono and F. Silaban as the architect and Ir. Rooseno as the consultant. It was then officially opened on 17th August 1961 by President Soekarno.

The top of the monument shaped like a flame, which symbolizes the spirit of Indonesian people which never be extinguished. It was made of a bronze medal which was 14.5 ton and was plated with 35 kg gold.

The standing pilar of the monument is 137 meter and it symbolizes a rice pestle while the cup representing a rice barn. Rice pestle and barn are traditional tools used to pound rice, which symbolizes Indonesia as an agricultural country.
