Monas was built based on the idea of Ir. Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia. He was helped by Sudarsono and F. Silaban as the architect and Ir. Rooseno as the consultant. It was then officially opened on 17^th August 1961 by President Soekarno.

The top of the monument shaped like a flame, which symbolizes the spirit of Indonesian people which never be extinguished. It was made of a bronze medal which was 14.5 ton and was plated with 35 kg gold.

The standing pilar of the monument is 137 meter and it symbolizes a rice pestle while the cup representing a rice barn. Rice pestle and barn are traditional tools used to pound rice, which symbolizes Indonesia as an agricultural country.
