Everybody knows Bali for having extraordinary and sandy beaches just like mentioned in white sand beaches in Bali. However, Bali is not only about beaches, there are some more spectacular things you can enjoy in Bali.

Bali is also perfect for those who are looking for something a little bit adventurous, as this island is full of great trails for hiking.

Most of the hiking trails offer spectacular views and are varied enough for all levels, starting from the novice hikers to fitness enthusiasts.

If you wish to hike in Bali, you can do it during the dry season which is from May to September. It is because this will give you the best chance of getting a clear view and a non-slippery trail. Let’s explore these 5 best hiking trails in Bali for your adventurous soul!

  • Mount Batur
Hiking through the trails in Mount Batur

The first recommended hiking trails in Bali is Mount Batur. This is also one of the most famous hikes in Bali. Towering over the island at 1,717 m high, Mount Batur is an active volcano. Mount Batur also overlooks Lake Batur.

Most people prefer to leave early in the morning to Mount Batur for its famous sunrise views. You would need to arrive at around 4 a.m. so if you’re not a morning person, you should take another plan. After hiking, you can do these things to do in Mount Batur too!

There are two main roads you take to hike. The most popular and difficult one will be from either from Pura Jati or Toya Bungkah on Lake Batur.

It takes around 2 to 3 hours to reach the summit. The easier one will involve driving towards Songan, then turn left at Serongga and driving until you reach a car park.

From there, it takes only about 45 minutes to reach the top. It is also recommended to arrange a guide to accompany you. You can finish your hike by helping your tired muscles relax in the nearby hot springs.

  • Mount Agung

Mount Agung is known as the most challenging trek in Bali. As the highest mountain in Bali, Mount Agung is also considered the most sacred volcano in Bali.

The locals thought that it was the replica of Mount Heru, the central axis of the universe. This is a popular trek in Bali, but incredibly challenging as well. Mount Batur is often enjoyed for its sunrise, but remember to enjoy that, you have to leave even earlier.

This mountain is at 3,031 meters tall, so it would take around 12 hours to hike (6-7 hours each way) if you depart from the Besakih temple.

You can also leave from Pura Pasar Agung if you wish to have a shorter hike. It will take around 3 to 4 hours each way. Keep in mind that both routes require a guide.

You also need to note that it is prohibited to hike Mount Agung during religious holidays.

  • Candidasa

Candidasa is another hiking trail in Bali you can explore. It is a very hilly area and perfect for some great Bali hikes. The main hiking trail is from Tenganan, which is a small ancient village in the regency of Karangasem.

The trail continues on to the neighboring villages of Macang and Ngis. To pass thee two villages, you will pass through rainforests and rice fields before turning back to Tenganan.

In terms of the difficulty, the trek is not that long and only takes a couple of hours, but it best when it is done with a guide.

You’re permitted to do it by yourself if you’re feeling adventurous and have a good sense of direction. Make sure to leave early in the morning to avoid the sweltering heat.

  • Sambangan (Secret Gardens)

This hiking trail is named that way because the Secret Garden is tucked away within Sambangan jungle in Northern Bali. The hiking trail starts from the Sambangan Secret Garden Waterfall car park.

It takes around 3 to 4 hours hike to reach the three spectacular waterfalls: Pucuk, Kembar and Kroya. You’ll also pass some rice paddies and delicious crops of coffee, cocoa, palm sugar and bananas.

Make sure to bring your swimsuit with you for a refreshing dip before going back to your car.

  • Campuran Ridge
The pleasant hiking in Campuran Ridge Walk

In Ubud, you will find the Campuran Ridge Walk. This is considered as a short and easy Bali hike on a paved road. The road will take you through a stunning jungle landscape.

The starting point of the hike will be near the Ibah Hotel and keep an eye for the signs “going to the hill” and “this way trekking Campuhan Ridge”. The hike will be pleasant as it is not difficult and is best enjoyed early in the morning before the sun becomes too hot.

You can stop at Karsa Café, which is located around 2 km walk, to have breakfast before turning back to where you start.
