When you come to Yogyakarta, don’t forget to come to Gunung Kidul, too. It is one of the regency in Yogyakarta where is dominated by mountains, but it has tens of beautiful beaches that are worth to be visited. Instead of cultural and traditional recreation, Gunung Kidul  is well-known as beach-going travelers.

So, if you stay some nights in Yogyakarta, you may probably want to come to Gunung Kidul. Just take a bus from Giwangan Bus station Yogyakarta, you will then take about an hour to two hours trip to reach Gunung Kidul Regency. Here are the 15 things to do in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta Indonesia:

1. Baron Beach

Baron beach is actually a bay that is surrounded by  green hills. It is actually a complete recreation place, because you can do water sport, hiking and camping in this are.

It is located in Kemadang village, Tanjungsari sub-district. You just need to take a ride for 40 km from Yogyakarta, then you will amaze  the natural environment in Baron beach.

The beach is decorated by fishermen ship and people’s huts that show its daily activity and traditional life from the local. Just stay some nights in this beach, so you can bring home a lot of experiences and memories.

2. Pok Tunggal Beach

Pok Tunggal Beach is located in Tepus Sub-district. From Yogyakarta, you need about 2 hours ride to get to this beach. Although  passing the bumpy road is a bad experience, but your journey will be worth after reaching this beach. The beach is so amazing with its white sand blue water. Another positive side for you who want to relax for all day long is the beach is so quiet. It gives you some energy to fill your body and soul.

The beach is so clean as well. There are some guards to keep the beach clean. So, you will take many nice spots for your photo collections.

The uniqueness from this beach is it has a rare tree, Duras Tree. that is why this beach was named Pok Tunggal because it comes from its tree name, Duras or Pok Tunggal.

3. Drini Beach

It is hard to choose which beach  is the best in gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. Because it has its own best scenery and uniqueness for visitors to be observed.

For the next beach that you can enjoy its natural environment and its beauty is Drini Beach. It is the beach that has an island in the front of the beach. The island is as a spot for the visitors to hike and and climb.

Besides the island, Drini beach has two parts of the beach. Why is it called two parts? It is because the wave that the beach gives. In the west beach, it is used for the fishermen to hang their ships down. The wave is  quite big, so it is not used as swimming spot for visitors.

However, in the  east side, people can enjoy their vacation for swimming, playing sand, and looking for some sea creatures. The low wave is safe for you who want to swim and play water sport. Come to Tanjungsari Subdistrcits, then you will find this stunning beach.

4. Jogan Beach

It is an unusual natural scenery. It is a combination of waterfall and beach. Yup! It is a Jogan beach. The waterfall from Karst Hill flows to Jogan beach. It is as a plus point for it, because it is one and only beach which may has waterfall  around Indonesia archipelago.

It will be a great spot for you to take some pictures of the beach and its environment around. Because, there is also a little cave that you can try to feel its amazing situation when you stand under it.

5. Pulang Syawal Beach

Located in Ngasem Village, Tepus subdistrict. This beach has a complete facilities that is actually managed privately.

Because of its management, this beach is well-known as Indrayati beach. The beach does not only serve its beautiful scenery with white sand and blue water, but also provide restaurant and cafe that serves local food and sea food as its special menu.

6. Krakal Beach

7. Ngobaran Beach

I think this is the best beach environment in Gunungkidul. There are some religion that live in this neighborhood, such as Islam, Hindu and Kejawen.

Located in Kaniogoro Village, Saptosari Sub-district, this beach has praying places for the religion I mentioned. So, it seems like it is a religion recreation for the visitors who come to this place.

One kind of the job for the local people is seaweed seeker. It is not about seaweed, but lobster, starfish and sea-urchin are also  sold to the visitors by the local. Thus, there are still many more great things to do in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta Indonesia.

8. Sepanjang Beach

Located in Wonosari Sub-district, Sepanjang beach is always named as Kuta bali beach. Why is it called Kuta beach? We can see from its white sand and low wave  that are similar to Kuta beach.

Sepanjang beach has a long beach line. It is an attractive place for visitors because the beach also has natural and beautiful coral reef. So, It is not always beach sand and blue water, but we can see the various coral reef and some fishes that are stuck in the coral.

9. Wediombo Beach

Wediombo is a unique beach, because it has a natural swimming pool. It is located in Girisubo Sub-district where it shows its attractiveness for surfers as well. Snorkeling will bring you a knowledge about various sea animals who are swimming or  trapped in the coral reef.

The coral reefs tower clearly in this beach. They give the uncommon view for the beach. if you are bored of swimming and playing sand. Cave and waterfall are also exist in Gunung Kidul. The calm and cool weather that  surround the location will give you another part of Gunung Kidul. Here are some caves and waterfalls that you must visit:

  1. Pindul Cave – This cave has an underground river stream. For about an hour you can go along river flow by riding a rubber boat.
  2. Jomblang Cave – It has vertical cave mouth. Its depth is 80 meters, so you need single rope technique to enter this cave.
  3. Tanding cave – Go along the river flow by taking a rubber boat with your friends. It will be fun and exciting in this cave.
  4. Sri Gethuk Waterfall – Located in Playen Sub-district, this waterfall can be enjoyed by using a rakit, a traditional boat made by bamboo.
  5. Kedung Kandang Waterfall – The waterfall which has six levels is surrounded by paddy field. Surely it will amaze you.
  6. Luweng Sampamg – It is an exotic waterfall in Gunungkidul. Visit it to see its stunning view and fresh air around.
